Clothes make the man. The way a person dresses – whether in a sari, a kimono or a suit – is one of the key indicators of their personality and their cultural, social and even religious identity. Founded in 1978, the Kyoto Costume Institute (KCI) places great emphasis on this societal, historical and artistic approach to clothing. The KCI holds one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of costumes, comprising a wide range of historical costumes, underwear, footwear and fashion accessories, from the 18th century to the present day.

‘Fashion’, a fascinating journey through the last three centuries of fashion, showcases the Institute’s extensive collection. With its remarkable photographs, which showcase the costumes skilfully styled on bespoke mannequins, the book illustrates how ‘clothing is an essential expression of our being’ and highlights the Institute’s passion for fashion, regarded as a rich and complex art form.

The authors are among the greatest minds and most perceptive observers in the field of fashion studies: Akiko Fukai (Director and Curator Emerita of the Kyoto Costume Institute), Tamami Suoh (Curator of the Kyoto Costume Institute), Miki Iwagami (Lecturer in Fashion History at Bunka Gakuen University, Tokyo), Reiko Koga (former lecturer in fashion history at Bunka Gakuen University) and Rie Nii (curator at the Kyoto Costume Institute).Size & Fit: 14 x 19.5 cm.
