This is the story of a certain Andy Warhol who, from the 1960s onwards, revolutionised the very concept of art. By drawing inspiration from and using iconic symbols and objects from popular culture and consumer society (Coca-Cola bottles, Campbell’s soup tins…), he played a major role in the emergence and development of a new art form, embodying a transgressive, eclectic and dynamic generation. A movement known as Pop Art, which very quickly came to permeate all cultural and creative fields of the 1960s and 1970s, ranging from the visual arts and product design to music and fashion. As a result, Pop Art has itself become popular culture, rather than merely a representation of it.
Having been continually reinterpreted by successive generations over the decades, this movement continues to exist to this day, particularly through the many social media platforms.
This new volume in Assouline’s Style series tells the full story – spanning sixty decades – of the energy and expansiveness of Pop Art, bringing together dynamic images from various eras and media sources.Size & Fit: 24.7 × 33.0 × 3.56 cm.
